The PS5 may still be relatively new, but that doesn’t mean that a collection of horror games isn’t starting to grow. In fact, some of the best PS5 games available right now are horror titles, perfect for spooking Halloween or all year round. As such, we’ve rounded up the best PS5 horror games to play, whatever the occasion.

It should be noted that while the PS5 is backward compatible with the PS4, we have chosen to focus on including native PS5 games with one exception. Native PS5 games perform better than PS4 titles, load faster thanks to the blazing fast SSD, and also take advantage of features like PS5 DualSense ray tracing and haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

Alan Wake remastered

Alan Wake Remastered CoffeeSource: Entertainment Remedy

Alan Wake remastered is the game that Remedy Entertainment fans have known and loved for all these years. For the very first time, it is available on PlayStation! The developers implemented new character models, improved textures, higher frame rate and more for this remaster while maintaining the overall classic experience.

The story sees writer Alan Wake suffering from a severe case of writer’s block. While on vacation with his wife Alice, she disappears and Alan loses his memory for a week after a serious car accident. Worse yet, as dark figures attack him at night, he continues to find pages of a manuscript he wrote, pages that seem to come to life. Players use a flashlight, flares, and guns to overcome the darkness, scorching the armor-like layer of darkness that infects this eerie city.

Alan Wake isn’t a pure survival horror game, and really, the strength is in his story. The characters and writing are fantastic, leading to some clever reveals and a gripping thriller split into multiple episodes. If you are a Stephen King, Twin Peaks, or Twilight Zone fan, or have played some of Remedy Entertainment’s latest games like Control, then you have to check out Alan Wake.

Returnal is not a pure horror game. Instead, it focuses on being a third-person sci-fi story first. Developed by Housemarque, one of the many teams at Sony Worldwide Studios, the main protagonist is Selene, an explorer whose ship crashes on the planet Atropos. Selene soon realizes that every time she dies, she wakes up at the crash site, making it her mission to explore Atropos and try to find a way out even though she’s fighting for it. remember everything and not lose your mind.

Returnal retains the action-packed gameplay that Housemarque is known for, with various alien weapons available to detonate hordes of strange creatures. The environments and enemies are unique, taking inspiration from the world of Prometheus. Fittingly, the story takes a dark turn as well, and things get more and more baffling as Selene finds more information about what’s going on on Atropos.

If you are looking for a big challenge to complete while trying to find some scary sci-fi, Returnal is definitely a game you can play.

Until dawn

Until Dawn is the aforementioned exception, as it’s technically not a real PS5 game. However, with that in mind, it runs at 60 FPS locked down on Sony’s latest machine, which means it’s a significant upgrade from the experience of playing on PS4, so we chose to include it.

Developed by Supermassive Games, it is essentially a big budget storytelling game, similar to Telltale Games. A group of friends gather for a winter getaway on the anniversary of a tragic loss. However, even if this happens, there appears to be someone or Something others on the mountain with them. As players switch between the different characters, they will have the opportunity to make decisions, determine how the actors see each other, and help or hinder you in the future.

What’s really special about Until Dawn is that your actions really have consequences. Anyone can live or die depending on what you do, so it’s extremely replayable. It’s also a great game for introducing the game as a whole to a friend or partner who doesn’t really play games.
