Warning: Spoilers for Do Revenge ahead

People can’t help but rave about the utterly shocking plot twist in Netflix’s new high school thriller Revenge, with Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke.

After dropping last week, the movie immediately shot to the top of the Netflix charts and, from the adorable outfits to the iconic soundtrack, viewers have no bad say about it.

Check out the trailer here:

The film, which effortlessly brought back the golden age of teen movies, tells the story of Drea (Camila Mendes) and Eleanor (Maya Hawke).

Drea is basically the Regina George of her high school. She has her life totally together as an It-girl on campus until her sex tape is leaked to the entire student body – apparently by her boyfriend Max.

Meanwhile, Eleanor is an awkward new transfer who has just learned that her former bully Carissa, who started a nasty rumor about her at summer camp when she was 13, is going to her new school.

After meeting at tennis camp, the unlikely pair decide to team up to get revenge on their tormentors once and for all

For most viewers, the chemistry between Drea and Eleanor is almost too much to bear, and many fans were hoping to see their friendship turn into something more. But things take an unlikely turn.

Do Revenge is everyone’s favorite new movie. Credit: Netflix

All hopes of a romance between Drea and Eleanor were finally dashed by viewers when they were bowled over by a totally unexpected plot twist.

And if you haven’t seen the movie yet, this is your last chance to look no further!

It turns out that Eleanor had been working against her co-conspirator the entire time and had actually been plotting revenge on her new friend Drea.

You see, Drea was Eleanor’s childhood bully that summer, not Carissa, and the scorned teenager never quite let up, which created an incredible twist.

Viewers flooded the Twitter verse with rave reviews once they finished the new teen flick, and couldn’t stop talking about the surprise ending.

One fan said, “Do Revenge definitely has one of the greatest twists in movie history, like -“

A second tweeted: ‘This twist is everything I can’t believe I didn’t see it coming’

“10/10 movie 10/10 twist. Good job Netflix,” commented a third.

And a fourth added: “#DoRevenge is such a good movie. I didn’t expect the plot twist and it’s like modern times mean girls.”

Revenge is available to stream on Netflix now.

If you’ve been on the internet at some point in the last month, you’ve probably seen the drama surrounding the don’t worry darling movie release. Harry Styles, a music icon and one of the film’s stars, and director Olivia Wilde refuse to look each other in the eye, and actress Florence Pugh seems to have no desire to rub shoulders with some cast members.

Here’s what we know: Shia Labeouf was originally cast as Styles’ role as Jack in the film. Wilde claims she fired Labeouf, but leaked conversations between the two shows that Labeouf may have left due to lack of rehearsal time between the cast. Wilde also reportedly begged Labeouf to come back, which people think is why there seems to be tension between Wilde and Styles.

Pugh also appears to take issue with a potential romantic relationship between Styles and Wilde. And Wilde strongly promoted don’t worry darling talking about the sex scenes between Pugh and Styles because they emphasize female pleasure instead of just male. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaarhowever, Pugh said she did not like that the film was “reduced” to its sex scenes.

Despite all the negative press, the film earned the seven-minute standing ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival. don’t worry darling keeps his audience’s attention, creating suspense at every turn.

don’t worry darling is a mash-up of Jordan Peele’s thriller get out and Peter Weir’s disturbing exploration of false realities in The Truman Show. Like the films of Weir and Peele, Wilde creates an atmosphere that feels offbeat from the start, and it makes audiences want to keep watching to figure out why.

The film opens with an old record spinning at a party at Jack (Styles) and Alice (Pugh). The party scene seems normal, with adults drinking cocktail after cocktail, playing board games and dancing like drunk teenagers.

An eerie sense of monotony dominates the film’s depiction of revelers returning to their daily routines, making it all feel like a simulation. When all the husbands leave for work, their cars retire at exactly the same time. While husbands are at work, their wives stay at home and in the community. They run errands and clean the house, but are forbidden to leave the community or visit the area where their husbands are supposed to work on the mysterious “Project Victory”, run by Frank (Chris Pine).

The set and costume design stand out as the film shapes Jack and Alice’s community, and although the film is set in the present day, it has a retro feel. Dated models of the husbands’ cars and the wives’ 60s and 70s style dresses add a vintage touch to the modern thriller.

Community members have no cell phones, only landlines, and the women listen exclusively to the radio throughout the day. Invoking a past works well with the film’s investigation of this community of control, as a handful of cults, including the Manson Family and the Peoples Temple, have come to national attention during these decades.

The sound design, especially with the radio, is the element that best creates unease in the community. It airs inspirational shows about the importance of sacrifice and “supporting the mission of the community.” Many twisted scenes in the movie have an annoying hum in the background that gets louder as the intensity of the scene increases.

While Styles’ focus in the film has been highly criticized on social networks, there’s a reason – revealed at the end of the film – why he’s the only Brit in the community. While the film’s length grabs your attention, there are plenty of confusing elements that don’t necessarily add to the plot or make it any clearer.

In a strange and unnecessary scene, Frank watches Jack and Alice make love in one of the rooms in his house. It seemed to serve no purpose other than to prove that Frank is scary, which was already evident based on the propaganda speeches he gives to the community.

Pugh’s role as Alice is the star of the film. She delivers a compelling performance as a woman struggling to understand this community and to maintain her sanity as she is enlightened by the men and other women around her.

Released in 2019, escape room was a surprise horror hit. With a release date of the first week of January, it looked like a movie the studio was throwing away to stray into the early part of the year, surely only to be overshadowed by the remnants of the holidays. However, the film was well-loved by horror fans for the over-the-top embrace of its central gimmick. It grossed $57 million domestically and $155.7 million worldwide on a relatively tiny budget of $9 million and then spawned a sequel in 2021. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions which opened in theaters on July 16, 2021.

The central premise of both escape room The films follow a group of individuals who are lured into what appears to be a normal escape room, but are instead convoluted death traps that they must solve in order to survive. This aroused a lot of sympathy among the Seen film franchise, a popular horror series where people are placed in elaborate death traps for them to solve, but with more emphasis on gore and shocking audiences. Both films also have a certain level of righteous frustration with capitalism, with Seen having some criticisms of the American healthcare system while escape room makes clear comments about how the 1% are not only above the law, but use the other 99% of misery for their own amusement. Whereas escape room on the surface may appear to be a toned down version of Seen, escape room stands out as its unique fun franchise.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

PG-13 rating works for escape rooms

When it comes to horror, movies with a PG-13 rating are often considered inferior because they aren’t able to fully embrace the gore that comes with an R rating, which the Seen films used wisely. Still, the problem is that the R rating can become a trap and filmmakers tend to rely on gore and violence to make up for any issues with the script and characterizations, the best example being how the R rating n didn’t do Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem better than PG-13 Alien vs Predator and resulted in a much worse movie.

escape room being PG-13 works to one’s advantage in several ways. Most importantly, it opens up a wider audience and is an ideal horror movie outing for young viewers who can’t get into an R-rated movie but are still looking for some scares. This in turn works for the box office, as young moviegoers are one of the most important audience members and are especially important in terms of horror movie box office. escape room is more accessible to members of the public than the Seen franchise, as there are a fair amount of viewers who might not want to try stomach Seen but can easily enjoy the thrills of escape room.

Difference Between Traps

While on the surface, escape room could be a PG-13 Seen, it helps define the film’s iconic death traps. These are the star attractions of both franchises, as audiences want to see what new creative ideas the filmmakers will come up with. The Seen The franchise is driven by the villain Jigsaw’s motivation to test people on their will to live, pushing the participants (and by extension the viewer) to see how far they will go to survive subjecting themselves to extreme horror and pain.

Related: Best Horror Movies Of 2022, So FarIn escape room, traps are puzzles created by the Minos Corporation as a means of entertainment for the wealthy (and a commentary on the movie watcher) and are meant to be the modern successor to gladiatorial games. Traps are meant to be puzzles that must be solved to survive, with unique themed locations offering clues to the clue. Everything in the escape room the film series, like the actual escape rooms, has a theme involving the games’ inherent theatrics as opposed to Saw more grounded single focused lens. Seen is intended to shock the public, where escape room is intended to challenge the public. In this way, one can clearly define that Seen is a horror franchise, while escape room is a thriller series.

Escape Room has great characters

escape room The premise is built around a group of characters thrown into a situation and having to work together to solve the puzzles if they want to survive. That means movies have to take a long time to develop the character’s personalities and stories. This level of investment in the characters builds tension as the audience becomes invested in making sure everyone lives, and when someone falls victim to a trap or heroically sacrifices themselves, the brunt of that is felt. by the public.

A young franchise with room to grow

The biggest difference between Seen and escape room is the number of entries. Seen has had nine entries released since 2004 with a tenth scheduled for 2023. Seven of the Seen movies were released year after year, so the franchise has become an annual Halloween tradition. escape room has had two films so far, with the COVID-19 pandemic not only delaying the release of Escape Room: Tournament of Champions but impacting that film’s box office due to public concerns about returning to theaters when it is released in July 2021. However, the film ended in a cliffhanger, leaving the door open for more to come. entries and could become a long series of films with a rotating cast of characters trying to escape complexly themed death traps.

Related: Why Escape Room 3 Needs To Happen

The fact that the first escape room performed well in January, while the second film made decent numbers during the summer movie season during the COVID-19 pandemic, proves that the film series has more freedom in terms of release date than the Seen movies, as both entries released outside of the Halloween season (2017 Jigsaw and 2021 Spiral: from Saw’s book) underperformed at the box office. This means escape room could open at any time of the year and the public will go there. It may not be a grotesque horror show like Seen or a philosophical masterpiece like cubeanother film on the same theme (which predates Seen), but escape room remains a fun thriller that stands on its own two feet.

The “guy in the gorilla suit” is synonymous with cheap genre films. If you had a budget of pocket fluff and pennies, you could knock out a low-rent schlockfest where your monster was some variation of a monkey in no time.

Hell, John Landis did just that in the early 1970s with his movie, Schlock.

The monkey as monster/antagonist/friend/hero has quite a cinematic heritage. These days, the Sharksploitation movie is the subgenre that gets all the attention for its outrageously endless character. But the monkeys did it first.

’90s cinema is having its moment of nostalgic rediscovery lately, and with that comes the opportunity to dig into films from that decade and see them through a modern lens. The 90s also had its fair share of monkey-centric genre entertainment. We got the (pretty good) remake of Mighty Joe Youngthe baseball movie Edand the period movie based on some real shit that actually happened, Buddy – where a wealthy lady played by René Russo attempts to raise a gorilla.

And then you have the movie congo, the subject of this article. In the wake of the resounding success of Spielberg jurassic parkHollywood began to adapt the works of Michael Crichton with typical Hollywood zeal when something gets big. 1995 produced congo – a big budget production directed by Frank Marshall.

Become the next jurassic park it didn’t, but it at least doubled its budget despite poor critical reception.

For those who are unaware, congo is a film about a group of scientists from a communications company who go on an expedition to the Congo, you guessed it, to find out what happened to their field team searching for a mine of rare diamonds. The team died suddenly and violently, possibly at the hands of mysterious but unidentified apes. Dr. Ross (Laura Linney) brings primatologist and animal trainer Dr. Elliot (Dylan Walsh) and his monkey, Amy, whom he trained to speak using sign language and sophisticated technology that verbalizes the words she signs.

Amy also drinks martinis.

Thrills and chills abound as the team comes up against hostile governments, hungry, hungry hippos and, yes, those violent apes that took out the initial ground crew.

Age does funny things to movies. Movies that were once absolute gems can lose their shine. And movies that looked like goofy duds can gain in charm as they mature over time. congo is one of these last films. I can’t say that I liked the movie too much when it came out. I don’t know what I wanted, but it was probably something like jurassic park… but with gorillas. Having recently rediscovered the film, having not seen it since it hit cable in the 90s, I can say the experience was like seeing it for the first time.

This movie is wacky, guys. Like, really wacky. No expense was spared with sets, locations and most importantly Amy effects – which of course were handled by Stan Winston Studios. Despite the on-screen money, there’s a strange sense of artifice in the film that can’t be ignored.

While location filming took up much of the production, reality wasn’t a focus when depicting the jungles here. In a way, it’s reminiscent of the visual language of classic adventure films of this ilk where sets and matte paintings dominated the setting. It makes sense given that Crichton himself designed the story as a tribute and update to King Solomon’s Mines. congo definitely taps into that luscious spirit. This is an old school adventure for modern times. Modern by mid-90s standards, that is. I’m pretty sure Marshall had his tongue stuck firmly in his cheek during the making of the movie, because it’s just too over the top to be accidental. The man is no stranger to humorous thrills; he achieved the classic total which is Arachnophobiaafter all.

movie congo tim curry

The pulp adventure tone is only heightened by a fantastic cast that does it in absolutely the best way. Ernie Hudson walks away with the entire film as field guide Monroe Kelly. Hudson sinks his teeth into the park with effortless charisma.

Tim Curry is also in the game as the traitorous Herkermer (understood? Like a diamond Herkimer?) Homolka. No stranger to accents in his career, Curry summons one of the most exaggerated Romanian accents I’ve ever heard in film. He’s completely gonzo here, and Curry alone is about half the camp call that congo offers.

Also, Bruce Campbell appears for the first 10 minutes or so, making you wish he was the lead instead of Walsh. No offense to Walsh… Linney and Walsh are useful as heroes, but they can’t keep up with their co-stars having the decor for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The film’s final act is where the action/adventure and sci-fi shenanigans really kick into high gear. We have hidden temples and caves. All sorts of over-engineered 90s movie tech is on display. We have lasers, motion guns and enough computer screens to fill two films. Killer monkeys are truly intimidating enemies. Winston and Co. knocked it out of the park with everything they did, and congo deserves mention alongside Winston’s most famous film achievements.

The weather has been good for congo and it requires a broad rediscovery in my opinion. It has a certain colorful, campy charm that oozes from every frame. Despite its PG-13 rating, it also has a handful of gnarly images for all the gore dogs out there. Where else can you find a movie with a talking, martini-drinking gorilla named Amy and Tim Curry using the craziest accent imaginable?

In the 90s, my friends. Only in the 90s.

Former “GoT” Actress Nathalie Emmanuel Now Stars in New Gothic Vampire Thriller

Missing those Sunday nights clinging to your seat watching game of thrones? Well, don’t worry, because a familiar face from the world’s most popular television series is back on the big screen. Nathalie Emmanuel is now starring in the new movie The invitation.Prior to her early acting days, Natalie began playing Missandei in games of thrones, theEmilia Clarke’s right-hand man who played Queen Daenerys Targaryen.

What is The invite on?

The plot follows Natalie Emmanuel who plays Eviea young woman who reconnects with a previously estranged cousin through a DNA test she took. Things take a dark turn when she finds herself guest at a posh estate in the English countryside of her wealthy, long-lost parents and uncovers dark secrets.

Natalie Emmanuel star of “The Invitation”

A vampire horror story with a twist

Emmanuel’s Evie finds herself in serious trouble once she arrives at the spooky mansion. Gradually, she realizes that there is more beyond the surface and that her new family is actually part of the generational bloodline of vampires. Much to Evie’s surprise, she’s basically settled down to be the new bride overseeing a family of vampires (like Bride-zilla but with fangs andvampire).

Beware of the family trap

Emmanuel’s character is lured into the rich trappings of vampire lair because she enters their property under the pretext that she is in fact related to everyone. There’s a palpable sense of discomfort that underscores the entire film as she sees the excessive wealth of her vampire “family” on display. Turns out it’s all a big thing to get Thomas Doherty(Gossip Girl) who plays Walter to marry Emmanuel and continue the nightmarish vampire legacy.

Jump or play?

The vampire thriller makes social commentary on many different themes, exploring everything from excessive wealth, class strife, family feuds, a thirst for immortality, and even forbidden love. Natalie Emmanuel said it best in a chat about the movie with The Hollywood Reporter:

What’s also very clear from the trailer and watching the movie is that there’s so much more to it than what’s in the trailer. There is so much more to see, discover and enjoy.

So will accept The invite? You just have to go and test it yourself.

The invite hits theaters on August 26, 2022. Be sure to watch the trailer here:

When David Lynch and Mark Frost broke through the veil of dreams to reveal the town of Twin Peaks in 1990 TV was a different place. At the time, TV screens were lit up with soap operas and sitcoms, and while there was a lot of stir about how Twin Peaks”defied” television standards, it’s also important to recognize how enamored its creators were with the medium’s tropes.

From the structure of police procedurals to the unbridled absurdity of soap opera storytelling, no convention was above reinvention. But if there is a single archetype that exists primarily because twin peaks breathed life into it, it is the tragedy of La Belle Morte.

A gruesome and tragic echo of real life, the fictional narrative is populated by missing or murdered young women, often as the catalyst for separate stories that chronicle the investigations into their disappearance. A frustrating number of these stories revel in the sensationalism and salaciousness of the crimes – a phenomenon that is not limited to fiction.

Pop culture’s insatiable appetite for true crime often eliminates the heartbreak left over from horrific acts and replaces it with spectacle. And while twin peaks uses the gruesome death of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) as a narrative pivot, it also never forgets it. 1992 Twin Peaks: Fire Walks With Mein particular, forces audiences to live in Laura’s despair and understand her complexity more intimately than ever.

“We cry between two worlds…”

twin peaks was unceremoniously canceled by ABC shortly after the Season 2 finale. However, just a month after the cancellation, Lynch and the show’s production company, Aaron Spelling Productions, decided to wrap up the story of the series with a trilogy of films. The first of these films, Fire walks with me, was a prequel that follows the final days of Laura Palmer and the secrets she took with her to the grave – secrets that were to span the next two films to provide a non-linear conclusion to the show’s original shocking cliffhanger .

But when the film first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1992, the initial reception unceremoniously quashed any chance of the second two films ever happening. A long-standing, unverified rumor says the room erupted in boos and jeers after the film wrapped – a moment co-screenwriter Robert Engels said never happened.

Many people felt that Lynch, a filmmaker who already had a reputation for pushing the boundaries of taste and sensibility, had simply chased his own pretension deep. Even Quentin Tarantino (also at Cannes that year screening his first film, reservoir dogs) claimed Lynch had “disappeared so far up his own ass” that he declared famous he would never watch another Lynch movie until he heard otherwise. The box office was the final nail in the coffin, with the film grossing just $4.2 million on a $10 million budget.

In David Hughes’ 2002 book The Complete Lynch, Fire walk with me Editor Mary Sweeney said the reason the film met with such vitriol was because of one simple fact: it wasn’t the show. Part of the film’s brilliance is how eager Lynch seems to take a hammer to preconceived notions of what twin peaks has been. While the show’s first two seasons blend the ominous supernatural with levity and humor, Fire walk with me struggles in its own anguish, failing to provide easy answers or simple solutions to the series’ many mysteries.

The series’ iconic main theme doesn’t appear until more than 30 minutes into the film, and it’s accompanied by stark visual contrast: Laura Palmer, symbol of the series’ repeated theme of innocence lost, sniffing cocaine in the toilets of his high school. Fire walks with me, like many of Lynch’s films, seems determined to examine the contrast between the outside and the inside, and how the private conflicts of individuals can sour a community from the inside. Not only is Laura suffering internally, but Twin Peaks as a place is also rotting from within – a fact that none of the characters who live there are particularly keen to accept.

At every turn, the film draws a deliberate line between Laura’s desperate pleas for help and the deaf ears they fall on, underscoring the tragedy of how she was ultimately stranded by those who didn’t know or those who didn’t care enough to help.

When talk to interviewer Chris Rodley of her decision to return to Twin Peaks for a prequel, Lynch replied, “I was in love with the character of Laura Palmer and her contradictions: beaming on the surface but dying inside.” In Fire walk with me, actress Lee has the space to inhabit these contradictions with heartbreaking rawness. Unlike the TV series, Laura is front and center to live out her own narrative – and to give audiences a front row seat in her crucible.

In what is undeniably one of the greatest performances of all time, Lee embodies Laura in all its roughness, bringing humanity and depth to her cocaine addiction, illicit sex work and complicated relationships with her many lovers. and friends. Despite the sexual abuse and visceral terror she regularly experiences, Lee never allows Laura to feel a single note in her despair.

Instead, the performer emphasizes the strength of will needed to reject the supernatural presence that corrupts her father, as well as the compassion she has for those around her. Even in her darkest moments, entirely in the grip of the vices she uses to escape the horrors of her waking life, Laura forges a legacy of light and warmth. Even the cruelty of her situation cannot deprive her of this.

It might be easy to see Twin Peaks: Fire Walks With Me as indulgent, pretentious or inscrutable. The film refuses to hold your hand, and while it mimics something resembling a traditional narrative structure, it also rejects comfortable classification and deliberately crawls under your skin. Others may view the film as brutal for brutality’s sake, as it contains one of the most harrowing depictions of violence ever to appear on screen.

But where he differs from his contemporaries is in the empathy he has for his central figurehead. In our contemporary media landscape, much of the television and film that revolves around acts of violence fails to focus on those most affected. Fire walk with me not only commits to intimately understanding the complexities of television’s most famous Dead Girl, but her ending also provides a beautiful catharsis by sanctifying Laura in the face of her pain.
