The new series will be developed by Lionsgate Television and Paramount+, with Gavin O’Connor – who directed the 2011 film – reportedly in talks with retired UFC champion and Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier and Gina Rodriguez to play two of the four main fighters competing in mixed martial arts matches.
The 2011 film starred Tom Hardy as former U.S. Marine Tommy Riordan, who enters a mixed martial arts tournament called Sparta in an attempt to win $5 million. The TV series would be completely different from that premise, however, and instead focus on “heart, desperation, and the demons that compel fighters to excel in the cage.”

The drama will be co-created with Adair Cole, who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner for the series alongside O’Connor. According to Deadline, O’Connor will direct and present all 10 episodes of the series, with Paramount+ now beginning processing and scriptwriting for the series. The report mentions that O’Connor is looking to cast the final two fighters and any additional supporting characters now.
