Northern Ireland TV Shows: Where were they filmed?

There are many TV series that have been filmed or toured here in Northern Ireland.

From Derry Girls, Line of Duty, Bloodlands and more, you’ve definitely seen a few.

You will often recognize where a few scenes have been put by watching and wonder about the others.

Here are some filming locations from the most popular television series filmed in NI.

Derry Girls




Amid political conflict in Northern Ireland in the 1990s, five high school students face the universal challenges of being a teenager.

Derry Girls series one and two were filmed in multiple locations in Co Derry and Belfast.

Scenes of the girls walking down the hill from their homes on their way to school were filmed at Limewood Street in Derry.

Belfast locations include St Mary’s University, New Barnsley Park and school scenes were filmed at Hunterhouse College in Finaghy.

Blood lands

This crime thriller follows Police Detective Tom Brannick across the country, who connects a possible suicide to an infamous cold case that has personal significance.

Starring James Nesbitt, it has been shot in many NI locations including Strandtown, Botanic Gardens, the Moyard / Springfield Road area and Queen’s University.

A dramatic scene in Bloodlands sees a police car explode and it took place at Ballynure Road in Ballyclare.

The iconic Harland and Wolff cranes in Belfast Docks are also a must-see when viewing.

Strangford Lough was also a key filming location.

Course of action

Line of Duty started filming in Belfast in 2014, with a number of locations in use.

The town cemetery was used in the show, with Detective Sergeant John Corbett buried there.

Other locations used include Tate’s Avenue, East Belfast Yacht Club, Somme Nursing Home, Bedford Street, Lagan Bridge and more.

Game Of Thrones



Game of Thrones, filmed in Castleward in 2010

Although the series is set in Never Land of Westeros, filming for Seasons 1-8 has taken place in over 20 NI locations.

These include the Titanic Studios in Belfast, Cushendun Caves, Murlough Bay, Ballintoy Harbor, Castle Ward (Winterfell) and Inch Abbey.

Dani’s castle




In the CBBC series, Dani inherits a castle in Northern Ireland from a long-lost aunt, but gets more than she expected.

This was filmed at Killyleagh Castle in County Down.

Marcella

Season 3 of Marcella sees the character infiltrated under the name of Keira Devlin, in order to expose the actions of the Maguire, a shady family in Belfast.

The widely featured Maguires Mansion is Larchfield Estate in Lisburn.

Other filming locations include Belfast Docks, the Stormont Hotel and Belfast city center.

The fall

A Detective Superintendent fights her own personal demons as she tries to get inside the head of a serial killer hidden behind a family man façade – starring Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan.

According to Northern Ireland Screen, some locations used for filming The Fall are: Belfast International Airport, Waterfront Hall, W5 at the Odyssey, New Lodge Estate, Rugby Road, Botanic Gardens, Victoria Park, Malmaison Hotel, Ulsterville Avenue , The Merchant Hotel, Hilton Hotel, Belfast Metropolitan College, Stranmillis Primary School, The Holiday Inn, Whiteabbey Hospital, McHugh’s Bar, Cityside Retail Park, Victoria Square.

The secret



The secret

Based on an account of the double murder of Lesley Howell and Trevor Buchanan, whose bodies were discovered in a smoke-filled car in Castlerock in 1991.

NI screen says The Secret was shot in Groomsport, Carrickfergus, Castlerock Beach BELFAST: Crumlin Road Goal, Belfast Royal Academy, Comber Road, Langford Close, Laganside Courts, Crawfordsburn Country Park, Culloden Hotel Cultra and Downpatrick.
