Video: Bollywood actress Gauahar Khan plays mind games in ‘Bestseller’

Bollywood actress Gauahar Khan loves gripping psychological thrillers and her latest “Bestseller” web series, streaming on Amazon Prime Video from February 18, ticks all those boxes.

In the series, Khan plays Mayanka, the supportive wife of popular novelist Tahir Wazir (Arjan Bajwa). When Wazir meets a stranger, played by Shruti Haasan, he is inspired to write a novel based on his troubled and violent past. Haasan plays a waitress at a cafe who claims to be a big fan of Wazir’s works.

But what Mayanka and her bestselling author husband fail to anticipate is a murky turn in their lives when they find themselves embroiled in a murder mystery following their interactions with her.

“Bestseller” is written by Dubai-based talent Althea Kaushal, who co-wrote scripts such as “Game” and “Happy New Year,” and also stars Mithun Chakraborty and Sonalee Kulkarni as fierce cops.

Khan, who has starred in series such as ‘Tandav’ and movies like ‘Ishaqzaade’ and ‘Rocket Singh’, talks to us about his latest series, his journey in Bollywood and working on strong roles…

Excerpts from our interview with Khan…

Tell us about your new “Bestseller” series and your role in it.

In ‘Bestseller’, there are these five or six characters whose lives are intertwined. On the one hand, you have this deputy police commissioner (Chakraborty) and her assistant (Marathi actress Kulkarni) trying to solve a mystery.

My character Mayanka is your everyday woman. She is excellent at her job and a go-getter. She is a leader in her work space, but in her personal life, she puts the needs of her husband Tahir Wazir and his family before her own at all times.

It’s a familiar scenario for many women today. There’s a trade-off on many fronts involved and those kinds of complexities make my role intriguing. Mayanka is an important factor in ‘Bestseller’.

Have web shows like “Bestseller” allowed actresses to explore their range?

These days, there’s something for everyone to watch. There are a variety of shows in multiple genres like science fiction, documentaries, and psychological thrillers. So we can’t keep it boring or stereotypical.

This is the perfect time for actors like me. I play a tenacious woman in ’14 Phere’, the right hand of a politician in ‘Tandav’, and I play a complex woman in ‘Bestseller’. I’m really excited for this new phase of our careers.

A lot of young women will identify with my character and it’s a role that will hook viewers to our show… A lot of people lose their minds on the show. When the script came to me during India’s first lockdown in March 2020, I couldn’t stop reading it and waited for the scripts. I play a pivotal role in the show and that gave me a lot of faith to continue during lockdown. And maybe that’s why I was so fascinated by ‘Bestseller’.

It is close to my heart and belongs to the thriller genre. Indeed, the screenwriter of the show Althea [Kaushal] is based in Dubai and she was my screenwriter for the first thriller of my career in 2012 called “Game”. It was such a good movie, but it came out at the wrong time during the World Cup and didn’t get as many looks. She’s a brilliant writer. Its ‘Bestseller’ will also keep you on the lookout.

So you’re not just playing a token supportive wife to a brilliant novelist husband going through writer’s block?

There is a lot more to Mayanka than that. These days, characters written for women have a lot more responsibility, and now they can share the weight of the show. The roles are specifically written for us. In fact, even actress Sonalee’s role as a female cop is a big role. So, kudos to the writers who gave us equal weight in this series.

Are you happy with your current career direction, or has the shine of working in entertainment faded?

I still don’t think I’ve had my day in entertainment. Even when I’m 80, I’ll feel like I haven’t had my day. I’m a performer who wants to work across all entertainment mediums – TV, OTT (streaming), stage or film. I want to participate in all of this. For the moment, I am quite satisfied with the evolution of my career. I am extremely picky with my projects, otherwise you would have seen me in many other projects. I always wonder about the impact of my character in any project in which I participate. I’m in no rush to add volume, but I want to be part of quality scripts.

Don’t miss it!
